Carpentry
Commercial and industrial carpenters construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures. These carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction, from buildings to highways and bridges to power plants.
Responsibilities include reading blueprints and specifications to determine scopes of work, measuring, marking, and cutting wooden and metallic materials, constructing, re-enforcing and dismantling concrete forms and working on miscellaneous construction projects such as building decks and steps, building bulletin boards and other wooden structures.

If you do not have any industrial experience or training, look for “Helper 3” Carpenter positions. If you do have experience in this field, look for jobs with qualifications that match your skills.
Generally, positions fall into these categories:
Helper: Helper carpenters assist in the construction, dismantling, and repair of wooden and metal objects and/or concrete forms. Positions range from entry level (Helper 3)to experienced helpers with an average of four to five years of experience.
Carpenter: Industrial Carpenters construct, dismantle, and repair wooden and metal objects and/or concrete forms. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four or more years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required
Foreman: Carpenter Foremen manage a carpenter crew of 1-15 employees as they construct, dismantle, and repair wooden and metal objects and/or concrete forms. Requires significant relevant construction experience and supervisory experience.
Training
While not required, formal education can help jumpstart your career. These carpentry positions do not require formal training or certification, but you can jumpstart your career by completing a NCCER Level 1 Carpentry course at Lamar State College - Port Arthur or The Golden Triangle Empowerment Center.
The course teaches students orientation to the trade, building materials, tools and drawings to prepare them for NCCER Level 1 certification.
