Do you like making connections? Industrial electricians install, troubleshoot and repair wiring, electrical equipment and other devices used in the industrial environment, such as motors, transformers, control systems, industrial instruments, programmable logic controllers and lighting systems.

Responsibilities include reading blueprints and specifications to determine scopes of work, cutting, bending and running conduit as specified on blueprints, installing trays according to specifications, terminating wires and cable to electrical equipment such as breakers, control panels, and distribution systems, and inspecting electrical equipment and components to identify hazards and to ensure the equipment is in good operational condition.

Jobs & Requirements

If you do not have any industrial experience, look for “Helper 3” Electrician positions - you will still need a State of Texas Electrical Apprentice License. If you have experience in this field, look for jobs with qualifications that match your skills.

Generally, positions fall into these categories:

  • Helper: Industrial Electrical Helpers assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, equipment, and fixtures. Positions range from entry level (Helper 3) to experienced helpers with an average of four to five years of experience.

  • Electrician: Industrial Journeyman Electricians install, repair, and maintain electrical wiring, conduit, equipment, and fixtures. They work on underground cable and conduit installation, terminating, and equipment installation. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four or more years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required.

  • Foreman: Industrial Electrical Foremen manage crews that install, repair, and maintain electrical wiring, conduit, equipment and fixtures. They work on underground cable and conduit installation, terminating, and equipment installation for all phases of new construction. Requires significant relevant construction experience and additional supervisory experience.

Training

At this time, industrial electrical services training is not available at Lamar State College (Port Arthur), Lamar State College (Orange) or the Lamar Institute of Technology.
