Instrumentation

Are you a problem solver with a knack for small details - and math? Instrumentation may be the perfect craft profession for you. Instrument fitters and technicians perform key installation and maintenance functions in piping, tubing, fasteners and metallurgy.

Responsibilities include reading prints and P&IDs to interpret the work to be completed and the required equipment and required tools to perform assigned work, working with piping systems to install instrumentation in order for the system to work properly, be controlled, and/or monitored and working with precision tools to calibrate instrumentation and to adjust installed electrical and piping components.

Jobs & Requirements

If you do not have any industrial experience or training, look for “Helper 3” instrument fitter positions. If you do have experience in this field, look for jobs with qualifications that match your skills.

Generally, positions fall into these categories:

  • Helper: Industrial Helper Instrument Fitters assist with both electrical and piping systems to install the required tubing and instruments for the system to be measured and/or controlled. Positions range from entry level (Helper 3) more experienced helpers with an average of four to five years of experience.

  • Instrument Fitter: Instrument technicians are responsible for installing, repairing, maintaining, and calibrating electronic equipment and gauges that control, regulate, and/or monitor a mechanical system. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four to five years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required.

  • Foremen: Instrumentation Foremen are involved in planning and supervising the activities of employees engaged in industrial construction. Requires significant relevant construction experience and additional supervisory experience.


Training

While not required, formal education can help jumpstart your career. These positions do not require formal training or certification, but you can jumpstart your career by completing an Associate of Applied Science degree or Electrical Instrumentation Certificate at LSC-PA, LSC-O or LIT.

Students are required to complete 60 credit hours (4 semesters) and can start courses on the Fall or Spring semester schedule.
