Do you like making connections? Mechanics maintain, service, install, repair and inspect machinery, heavy equipment and electrical systems in industrial plants and/or industrial settings in order to keep them in good working order.

 Responsibilities include detecting problems with machines and equipment, disassembling, repairing and/or replacing parts to equipment, performing tests to ensure machinery is running smoothly and completing preventative maintenance on machinery such as engines and motors.

Jobs & Requirements

If you do not have any industrial experience or training, look for “Helper 3” mechanic positions. If you do have experience in this field, look for jobs with qualifications that match your skills.

Generally, positions fall into these categories:

  • Helper: Mechanic Helpers assist in maintaining, servicing, installing, repairing and inspecting machinery, heavy equipment and electrical systems in industrial plants and/or industrial settings in order to keep them in good working order. Positions range from entry level (Helper 3) more experienced helpers with an average of four to five years of experience.

  • Mechanic: Mechanics maintain, service, install, repair and inspect machinery, heavy equipment and electrical systems in industrial plants and/or industrial settings in order to keep them in good working order. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four to five years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required.

  • Oiler: Oilers install, assemble, dismantle, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair machinery and equipment on an industrial project. They will work on Large and small engines, motors, pumps, and other mechanical machinery. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four to five years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required.

  • Foreman: Industrial Foremen & General ForemenMechanics supervise assembly of machinery. They work on small engines, motors, pumps, and other mechanical machinery. Requires significant relevant construction experience and additional supervisory experience.


Training

While not required, formal education can help jumpstart your career. Lamar Institute of Technology: LIT offers both a certification and an associate degree Industrial Mechanics Technology and the Golden Triangle Empowerment Center offers an NCCER Level 1 course.

How long will it take? 30 credit hours (2 semesters) required
