Structural Steel Worker
Structural Steel Ironworkers plan, fabricate and install iron and steel structures according to specifications. Position responsibilities include connecting columns, beams, girders and other steel members into specific locations for support. Using specialized techniques, Ironworkers will ensure proper alignment, positions, and quality of structural steel structures before permanent bolting and riveting takes place.
Responsibilities include mastering proper and safe use of a variety of hand and hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical power tools, recognizing various structural shapes, directing and assembling different types of mobile and tower construction cranes and creating and developing complex rigging plans for heavy structural steel lifts.

If you do not have any industrial experience or training, look for “Helper 3” steel worker positions. If you do have experience in this field, look for jobs with qualifications that match your skills.
Generally, positions fall into these categories:
Helper: Structural steel worker helpers assist in the construction, fabrication and modification of steel and iron materials using various types of fasteners and equipment. Positions range from entry level (Helper 3) more experienced helpers with an average of four to five years of experience.
Ironworker: Journeyman steel workers construct, fabricate and modify steel and iron materials using various types of fasteners and equipment. Requirements are listed by position, but generally four to five years of journeyman experience or significant helper experience is required.
Foreman: Foremen for structural steel workers oversee and manage crews constructing structures to specifications. Requires significant relevant construction experience and additional supervisory experience.
Training
These positions don’t require formal training, but if you need help getting ready to apply or interview, consider some soft skills courses to put your best foot forward.
The Golden Triangle Empowerment Center also offers an NCCER Level 1 introductory course that can help you develop skills and earn certifications.
