Surveying

Surveyors take measurements and determine boundaries necessary to the construction process and provide data relevant to the shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth's surface for engineering, mapmaking, mining, land evaluation, and other purposes.

Responsibilities include determining methods and procedures for best establishing or reestablishing survey control, coordinating findings with engineering and architectural personnel and preparing proper information for layout and grading.

Jobs & Requirements

If you do not have any experience or training, you can start as an assistant surveyor with basic knowledge of the tools and construction techniques.

Generally, positions fall into these categories:

  • Assistant: Surveyor Assistants assist survey teams in providing information relevant to the elevation, shape, contour, gravitation, location, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth’s surface construction purposes.

  • Surveyor: Surveyors assists the Survey Foremen/Party Chief in the researching of historical documentation, surveying and measuring of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction, mapmaking, and land division.

  • Foreman: Party Chiefs supervise survey crews in taking measurements and preparing information. Requires significant relevant construction experience and additional supervisory experience.


Training

Lamar Institute of Technology: LIT offers  an Associate Degree in Computer Drafting Technology, which teaches students about basic geometric properties and techniques used to draft models and plans for industrial, residential and civil structures.

How long will it take? 60 credit hours (4 semesters) required

When can I start? Courses run on Fall and Spring semester schedule

How much does it cost? $2,500 per semester ($10,000 total) on average
