Welding

Welders join objects together with heat and install many types of metal equipment, including pipe, structural supports and others. There are several different types of welding that require different levels of education and perform different duties. Some welding positions require completion of formal training programs or certifications.

Responsibilities include selecting equipment and planning, laying out, assembling, and welding materials applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques, bolting, clamping, and tack-welding parts to secure in position for welding and setting up equipment and welding parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas arc welding equipment.

Jobs & Requirements

All welding positions require formal training and prior experience.

Generally, positions fall into these categories:

  • Rodroom attendant: Industrial Rodroom attendants work in the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Rod Room and be responsible for issuing, tracking and maintaining welding rods. Requires 2+ years of relevant experience.

  • Welder: Welders join, fabricate and assist pipe fitters in installation of varying types of industrial pipe (carbon, stainless and chrome) into the projects piping systems. The Golden Pass export project will create opportunities for pipe, combination and structural welders. Requires 4+ years of experience.


Training

LSC-O and LIT offer programs in welding designed to prepare students for entry-level welding occupations on a spring and fall semester schedule and provide additional welding skills using techniques in oxyacetylene, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, and gas tungsten arc welding processes.
